Councils

Introduce with: “JCIMUN hosts councils tailored to high school participants, offering engaging and educational debate topics.

The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Unlike debate-based councils, the ICJ at CIMUN simulates real judicial proceedings where delegates act as judges, advocates, and legal advisors to resolve disputes between states.

This council offers a rigorous and intellectually challenging experience rooted in international law.

Focus Areas

  • Territorial disputes
  • Human rights violations
  • Treaty interpretation
  • Maritime boundaries and sovereignty claims

ECOSOC plays a central role in coordinating the UN’s economic, environmental, and social initiatives. At CIMUN, ECOSOC encourages delegates to design practical and inclusive solutions to global socio-economic challenges.

With its broad mandate, this council emphasizes negotiation, collaboration, and creative policy development.

Focus Areas

  • Global economic stability
  • Sustainable development and the SDGs
  • Public health, education, and social equity
  • International cooperation and funding mechanisms

The Security Council is the UN’s most powerful decision-making body, responsible for maintaining international peace and security. At CIMUN, delegates engage in high-pressure, real-time diplomacy and draft binding resolutions.

This council demands strategic thinking, adaptability, and strong negotiation skills.

Focus Areas

  • Armed conflicts and peacekeeping
  • Counterterrorism
  • Nuclear security and non-proliferation
  • Crisis response and humanitarian protection

The Human Rights Council addresses human rights violations and promotes the protection of fundamental freedoms worldwide. At CIMUN, delegates tackle sensitive issues while balancing humanitarian principles with political realities.

This council fosters empathy, ethical reasoning, and legal awareness.

Focus Areas

  • Civil liberties and political rights
  • Refugee protection and migration
  • Gender equality and minority rights
  • Accountability for human rights abuses

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is responsible for addressing global challenges related to crime, drugs, corruption, and terrorism. At CIMUN, this council allows delegates to explore complex transnational threats requiring international cooperation.

Delegates analyze criminal networks, legal frameworks, and enforcement mechanisms to promote justice and security.

Focus Areas

  • Countering organized crime and trafficking networks
  • Combatting the global drug trade
  • Anti-corruption frameworks and transparency measures
  • Preventing terrorism and strengthening criminal justice systems
